Based in Anchorage, the Alaska Public Radio Network is a member-based organization of 25 independent public radio stations spread across Alaska. These stations pool their resources to build and share news and public affairs programming of statewide value, boosting service to Alaska’s citizens.
Programming / News
APRN’s flagship news program, Alaska News Nightly, is a weekday evening 30-minute news show produced year-round. APRN also produces Alaska Morning News and the Alaska Economic Report each weekday morning, and Talk of Alaska, a weekly statewide call-in community affairs program.
Organization
APRN is a division of Alaska Public Telecommunications, Inc. (APTI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Anchorage. APTI is dedicated to public service media for Alaska via television (KAKM), radio (KSKA) and APRN.
APRN’s mission and services are governed by the APTI Board of Directors, which includes representation from around the state. Member stations, through the APRN News Board, monitor matters of programming, journalistic ethics and station services.
Patrick Yack is the Vice President of News and Public Media for APTI. Lori Townsend is the News Director for APRN. Annie Feidt is a producer and reporter based in Anchorage. Steve Heimel is a senior producer, reporter and host of Talk of Alaska. Libby Casey is an APRN reporter based Washington DC. Dave Donaldson is an APRN reporter based in Juneau.
KSKA’s Len Anderson also contributes regularly to the APRN news report, as does KSKA’s Ellen Lockyer.
Funding
APRN relies upon several critical funding streams. First, it receives dues from member stations for services provided each year. APRN also gets financial support from corporate underwriters. Some capital improvements have been funded by grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting as well as other public and private foundations, such as the Rasmuson Foundation. Individual financial gifts are also appreciated.
