Ben Stamm scratches at Nikolai

The Iditarod Trail Committee reports Wisconsin-based musher Ben Stamm dropped out of the running at 11:00 a.m. today due to a knee injury. That brings the total scratch count for the 2007 race to 15 teams.

While the trail was fast this year, it was also dangerous. Most mushers received some kind of injury when passing across the Alaska Range. Mushers must care for their dog teams every step of the way — without additional help — so injuries to the human can put the dogs at risk of poor care. Stamm cited the welfare of his team as one of his reasons for scratching.

He has finished the Iditarod twice before, in 2003 and 2004.
