Martin Buser pulled into McGrath just after 6:45 p.m. this evening, and at last report was taking an extended breather. Meanwhile, Lance Mackey arrived around 8:20 p.m., took care of some business at the checkpoint, then took off for Takotna. The two have traded the lead position a couple of times in the last 24 hours already.
Mackey just won the Yukon Quest a few weeks ago, and he’s finished in the Iditarod top 10 twice before. Will this year mark his first Iditarod win?
Meanwhile, back at Rainy Pass, two more mushers scratched out of the 2007 running. Randy Cummins dropped out at 3:00 p.m. local time, citing sled damage and an injured shoulder. Richard Hum cancelled his first attempt at the Iditarod just after 5:00 p.m. — no specific reason was released by race officials.
